The epic ending line ‘with his shoes in hand, but without his soul…’ really epitomizes this narration style. However, the short story mainly focuses on Frankie, and his interactions with other people, and makes it clear that Maggie is a secondary character. This allows for a more objective view of what’s happening, and it lets the reader get a sense for the emotions of each of the characters through no particular frame. In the short story, there is no ‘view’ just an omnipresent narrator telling the story. Secondly, the purpose of the narrator (narration) varies in the movie and short story version. All in all, the movie gives Frankie and Maggie a chiefly trainer-fighter relationship, while the book gives them a father-daughter bond that truly makes them come to life. He doesn’t like to see women get beat up and hurt, and so the reader gets the impression that Frankie is protecting Maggie. Toole gives an explanation for this that I think the movie lacks: Frankie is old fashioned. He denies that he’ll train her, various times, but F.X. In the story version however, Frankie immediately sees that Maggie is driven and proud and she reminds him of his own daughter. He continually denied he even liked the girl, although he eventually treated her like a daughter. In the movie version, directed by Clint Eastwood, Frankie seemed to see Maggie as an inconvenience at first and wouldn’t train her, or even give her a chance. The whole idea of the story focuses on the father-daughter relationship that Frankie and Maggie have (respectively). Toole, was the most effective for me, because of the Development of relationships, Purpose of narrator (narration) and expression of conflict.įirst of all, the development of relationships in Million Dollar Baby was a very important concept. However, although the same basic story is the same in both the movie and short story versions, there are specific things that help communicate this message better. About being strong enough to do what you must for those you love. Million Dollar Baby is a story about warriors.
